Have you been taking acid reflux medications for longer than 6-months?

I wanted to take a moment today to bring up the acid reflux epidemic we are having today.  Currently about 40% of Americans suffer from heartburn attacks every month, while many of them are experiencing them weekly. One of the main solutions being prescribed is extended use of heartburn medications.

Whether you believe heartburn to be hereditary or not, what you put into your body is definitely going to be a major factor with how your body deals with it.

Right now Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are the most commonly used medications to help with acid reflux.  Some common ones are Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec.  So what does a PPI do?  Great question!  It doesn’t necessarily relieve acid reflux; it inhibits the acid production in the stomach. This sounds like a great idea, but blocking the acid production may raise the risk to certain food-borne infections and malabsorption of certain vitamins and calcium.  Malabsorption of calcium then increases the risk of bone fractures.  Anyone who is increasing in age needs to be extremely aware of the risks to increased bone fractures.  Dealing with a hip fracture, especially at an elderly age can open the door for more serious health problems.

Like I like I mentioned earlier, heartburn medications don’t fix anything.  They provide you with a temporary relief.  Those who take the medications on a daily basis to avoid ever having to deal with it might be falling into an unknown trap thinking everything is okay because you aren’t experiencing the pain.  This is how people get Barrett’s Syndrome.  The acid is still traveling up and down the esophagus, doing the damage and essentially eating it away.

Some other symptoms of chronic heartburn medication are vitamin B12 deficiency and even cardiovascular issues that have shown to increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Some doctors believe the health benefits of being pain-free from the acid reflux are worth the risks of the side-effects.  Others feel that the only time one should be using the medications is when it is partnered with something that is actually fixing the problem, like changes in diet.

But what if there was one thing you could change to put your body in a natural state to heal itself without any medications?

Take a moment and check out this water that I drink on a daily basis.  This has assisted in helping many people I know find relief from the pain of acid reflux.  Alkalized Water
